Abstract
The phrase “osviashchennyi sobor” in the sources of the period between the fourteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
The author of the article investigates the use of the phrase osviashchennyi sobor in the Russian sources of the period between the fourteenth and early sixteenth centuries. The various interpretations of the phrase as something like a council of bishops with definite membership and agenda, still current in historiography, are analyzed and criticized. It seems that high-ranking clergymen did not belong to any institution. The osviashchennyi sobor of Russian medieval texts should not be understood as a council of Church hierarchs, but only as a gathering of clerics.
