Abstract
Social aspects of the veche. Historiographical observations.
This article deals with the long-debated topic of medieval Russia’s popular gatherings, or veche. An analysis of historiography shows that Soviet-era historians of the veche were little informed about the animated and fruitful discussion about East and West Slavs’ “popular gatherings” in which a majority of Polish and German scholars took part in the 1970s. According to the author, a comparative study of Russian town dwellers’ political and social activities in the Middle Ages in the larger context of European history is still very much topical.
