Abstract
From “land” to “grand princedom”: Tendencies in East European political developments between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries.
The article deals with the territorial-political changes that took place in the East Slavic lands between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The author studies the mechanics of all the annexations (primysly) of territories performed by Russian and Lithuanian princes. It becomes clear that these annexations were not due to Muscovite and Lithuanian policies alone. Even though the Golden Horde did not initiate East European territorial changes, its role in the process was significant. The Muscovite and Lithuanian princes were more skillful than other rulers at making use of the repeated subdivision of the land.
