Россия и появление казачества на Волге и на Дοнү
Abstracts
Abstract
Russia and the appearance of Cossacks on the Volga and Don rivers between the fifteenth and mid-sixteenth centuries.
The article is devoted to the issue of the Cossacks’ origin. The author’s conclusion is that the Cossacks did not constitute a separate nation that had inhabited the Don region since ancient times. They owe their existence to the Golden Horde’s disintegration and the mass flight of ruined service gentry from Russia and Rzeczpospolita. It is the Russian government’s policy that favored the development of that particular ethno-cultural community of the Don and Volga rivers -- the free Cossacks.
