ABSTRACT
Six hitherto unpublished letters by Boris Pil1´niak about his first stay in the Far East (China and Japan) in 1926.
We are publishing here for the first time six letters written by Boris Pil´niak (1894-1938) which provide us with an overall view of the writer’s first trip to the Far East between March and September 1926. These letters reveal Pil´niak’s first impressions of Asia, his friendship with various members of the Japanese intelligentsia and his action in favor of a cultural rapprochement of the Soviet Union with Japan and China. Also of interest is the fact that Pil´niak was an object of suspicion for the Chinese authorities in Harbin and the Tokkô, Japan’s dreaded special police. Annotations to the letters are based on materials from the archives of the Soviet Association for Cultural Ties (VOKS) with Foreign Countries and from those of the Japanese Foreign Affairs Department.
