Références eurasiennes au Kazakhstan contemporain
Abstracts
References to Eurasia in contemporary Kazakhstan. – The quest for identity prevailing in the former Soviet republics has often shown itself in Kazakhstan in frequent use of the term Eurasia in various meanings. The idea of an Eurasian destiny for Kazakhstan was certainly aploy on the part of Nazarbaev’s regime to divert the attention of Russian-speaking citizens from the country’s increasing rivalry with Moscow. However, the multiplicity of opinions voiced and of people involved in the debate reveals a genuine willingness to integrate certain positive elements of Russian influence as vehicle of theEuropean identity claimed by most of the intelligentsia. This attitude is due to a general feeling of uncertainty which appeared over the last few years as to the place of Kazakhstan in the region – internal Asia –, a traditional crossroads between several cultures. Thus, the various representations of Eurasia are at the center of a thinking process about the “civilizational” identity of the country whose various aspects need to be studied.
